Biography
Daniel Negreanu was born in Toronto, Ontario, in 1974 to Romanian immigrant parents. He discovered gambling and card games at a young age and began building his reputation in Toronto card rooms before moving to Las Vegas to chase a professional poker career.
His first major breakthrough came at the 1998 World Series of Poker, where he won the $2,000 Pot Limit Hold’em event. That victory gave him his first WSOP bracelet and made him one of the youngest bracelet winners in WSOP history at the time. The win also helped cement the nickname “Kid Poker”.
During the poker boom, Negreanu became one of the game’s most marketable players. He was sharp on camera, comfortable with interviews and carried a table presence that made him easy for casual fans to follow. His strength was not just technical skill. He became famous for talking through hands, putting opponents on specific holdings and making poker feel more understandable to the audience watching at home.
Negreanu’s career has included success in No Limit Hold’em, Limit Hold’em, Pot Limit Hold’em, mixed games, high rollers and televised invitational formats. He won WSOP Player of the Year in 2004 and again in 2013, becoming the first player to win the award twice. He also won WPT Player of the Year for the 2004 to 2005 season.
In 2014, he was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame. That same year, he recorded the biggest live cash of his career when he finished second in the $1,000,000 Big One for One Drop for $8,288,001.
After more than a decade without a bracelet, Negreanu returned to the WSOP winner’s circle in 2024 by winning the prestigious $50,000 Poker Players Championship. The victory was widely viewed as one of the most important wins of his later career because of the event’s reputation among elite mixed game players.
