Biography
Michael Watson was born in 1984 in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, and later became closely associated with Toronto, Ontario. In poker circles he is better known as Mike Watson or “SirWatts”, a name that has followed him from online poker into the highest buy in live tournaments in the world.
Watson’s first major live breakthrough came in 2008, when he won the WPT Bellagio Cup IV Championship Event in Las Vegas for $1,673,770. That win made him a WPT champion and announced him as one of Canada’s strongest tournament players.
Michael Watson He later added two European Poker Tour Main Event titles, first at the 2016 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure and then at EPT Monte Carlo in 2023. The Monte Carlo victory was especially notable because it made Watson only the third player at the time to win two live EPT Main Event titles.
For years, the only missing piece on Watson’s résumé was a WSOP bracelet. That changed in 2024, when he won the WSOP Online $1,000 No Limit Hold’em 6 Max Championship for $138,327. The win completed poker’s unofficial Triple Crown, giving Watson a WSOP bracelet, a WPT title and EPT Main Event titles.
Michael Watson at Triton Jeju Watson has also become a major figure on the Triton Poker circuit. By May 2026 he had reached seven Triton titles, including back to back wins at Triton Montenegro in May 2026. His Triton record pushed him further into the conversation around the best all format tournament players in the world.
Michael Watson Trivia
Michael Watson is not a loud poker celebrity. His reputation is built on results, range work and an ability to move between formats without drama.
The big career storyline was the WSOP bracelet chase. Watson had come close several times before finally winning online in 2024, a result that gave him the Triple Crown and removed the only obvious gap from his tournament résumé.
Watson’s two EPT Main Event wins put him in rare company. Very few players have ever won multiple EPT Main Events, and Watson did it seven years apart, which says plenty about his longevity.
He is also one of the clearest examples of the modern Canadian poker pro: online background, live high roller success, low public noise, enormous results.
