Learn the Language of Poker — From "Big Slick" to "Quads"

Poker Glossary (A–Z)
A
Action – A term for betting activity in a hand. "Lots of action" means heavy betting.
Air – A completely worthless hand.
Aces Full – A full house with three aces and a pair.
Aces Up – Two pair with one being a pair of aces.
American Airlines – Nickname for pocket Aces (AA).
Anna Kournikova – AK offsuit. Looks good, doesn’t always win.
B
Backdoor – Hitting both the turn and river to complete a draw.
Bad Beat – Losing a hand where you were a big statistical favorite.
Big Blind (BB) – A forced bet posted by the player two seats left of the dealer.
Big Slick – Ace-King (AK).
Blank – A community card that doesn’t affect the strength of hands.
Broadway – An Ace-high straight (A-K-Q-J-T).
Bullet – A bet or a single chip. Also slang for pocket Aces.
Boat – Slang for a full house.
Button – The dealer position at the table.
C
Call – Matching the current bet.
Check – Passing the action to the next player without betting.
Check-Raise – Checking and then raising after an opponent bets.
Cowboys – Pocket Kings (KK).
Cooler – A strong hand that loses to an even stronger one.
Connectors – Cards in sequence, like8♠9♠.
Cracked – When a strong hand (like Aces) gets beaten.
D
Dead Man’s Hand – Two black Aces and two black 8s (allegedly held by Wild Bill Hickok when he was shot).
Donk Bet – A bet made out of position by someone who wasn't the aggressor in the previous street.
Drawing Dead – No possible card can make your hand win.
Duck – Slang for a deuce (2).
E
Effective Stack – The smaller stack size involved in a hand, used to determine maximum risk.
Equity – Your share of the pot based on current odds.
F
Flop – The first three community cards dealt face up.
Fish – A weak or inexperienced player.
Flat Call – Calling without raising, often to trap or slow play.
Full House – A hand with three of a kind and a pair.
G
Gutshot – A straight draw where one specific card is needed in the middle of the sequence (e.g., 5-6-8-9 needs a 7).
Grinder – A player who plays many small pots to slowly build a bankroll.
H
Hero Call – Calling a big bet with a weak hand, often with just a read.
Hijack – The position two seats right of the button.
Hole Cards – Your private cards in Texas Hold'em or Omaha.
Hook(s) – Pocket Jacks (JJ).
House – A full house.
I
Implied Odds – The potential future winnings if you hit your draw.
Iceberg – A large stack hiding by playing tight or passively.
J
Jackpot – A big bonus, often in casino cash games, for rare occurrences like a cracked Aces full.
Jam – To go all-in.
Johnnie Chan –J♠10♠, a hand he famously won with.
K
Kicker – The side card that breaks ties.
Knocked Out – Eliminated from a tournament.
Kojak – K-J (King-Jack).
L
Limp – Just calling the big blind pre-flop.
Lollipop – A single high card hand, no pair, just sweet to look at.
M
Made Hand – A hand that doesn’t need improvement to win.
Monster – A very strong hand.
Muck – Folding your hand or discarding it unseen.
N
Nuts – The best possible hand at the moment.
Nut Flush – The best possible flush.
O
Offsuit (o) – Cards of different suits.
Open-Ended Straight Draw – A straight draw with two possible cards to complete it (e.g., 6-7-8-9 needs a 5 or 10).
Overpair – A pocket pair higher than any card on the board.
Overs – Cards higher than the flop cards.
P
Pocket Rockets – Pocket Aces (AA).
Paint – Face cards (J, Q, K).
Poker Face – A neutral facial expression used to hide tells.
Position – Your spot in relation to the dealer; the later, the better.
Q
Quads – Four of a kind.
Queen High – A hand where the highest card is a Queen.
R
Rags – Low, unconnected cards.
Rainbow – A flop with three different suits, reducing flush possibilities.
Raiser – The player who last raised.
River – The fifth and final community card.
Rockets – Another nickname for AA.
S
Set – Three of a kind made with a pocket pair and one on the board.
Shark – A strong, often predatory player.
Short Stack – A player with a small number of chips compared to the table.
Slowplay – Trapping by playing a strong hand passively.
Snowmen – Pocket eights (88).
Suited (s) – Cards of the same suit.
Suited Connectors – Cards of the same suit in sequence (e.g.,9♠10♠).
T
The Turn – The fourth community card.
Trips – Three of a kind (not using a pocket pair).
Tilt – Emotional frustration that leads to poor decisions.
Top Pair – A pair made with the highest board card.
Top Set – A set using the highest possible card on the board.
Two Pair – A hand with two different pairs.
U
Under the Gun (UTG) – First to act preflop.
Underdog – A hand statistically behind in equity.
V
Value Bet – A bet made with the intention of being called by a worse hand.
Villain – Term for your opponent in hand discussions.
W
Wheel – A straight from Ace to Five (A-2-3-4-5).
Whiff – To miss a draw or the board completely.
Wet Board – A board with many potential draws.
Z
Zero Equity Bluff – A bluff with no outs or improvement chance—pure aggression.
