Biography

Sam Greenwood was born in Toronto, Ontario, in 1988. Before becoming one of the most feared live high roller players in the world, he built much of his reputation online under screen names such as Str8$$$Homey on PokerStars and IfHeDiesHeDies on Full Tilt Poker.

Greenwood’s poker rise came through volume, study and a willingness to battle in difficult games. He became known as a strong online tournament player before his live results caught up with that reputation. His live tournament record now places him among the most successful Canadian players in poker history.

His first major live breakthrough came at the 2015 World Series of Poker, where he won the $1,000 No Limit Hold’em event for $318,977. The victory gave Greenwood his first WSOP bracelet and also made him the first Canadian bracelet winner of that WSOP series.

From there, Greenwood moved firmly into the global high roller circuit. He became a regular in six figure buy in events across Europe, Asia, the Caribbean and Las Vegas. His biggest career score came in 2023, when he won the $250,000 PCA Super High Roller for $3,276,760 after defeating Jean Noel Thorel heads up.

Greenwood has also been a consistent force in Triton Poker events, where he has recorded several seven figure scores and deep runs against some of the strongest fields in the game. His results across PCA, EPT, Triton, WSOP and other high roller series have made him one of Canada’s elite tournament players.

Away from live poker, Greenwood has also worked as a coach and strategy content creator. He is connected to Run It Once as an Elite Pro and has published poker thoughts and strategy through Punt of the Day.

Sam Greenwood Trivia

Sam Greenwood is one of three poker-playing brothers, alongside Luc and Max, the latter of whom won a WSOP bracelet in 2008. Sam secured his own WSOP bracelet in 2015, making the Greenwoods one of the few families with multiple bracelet winners.

Over his career, he has won major titles in both live and online poker, playing under well-known digital screen names including Str8$$$Homey, IfHeDiesHeDies, DeanMalenko, and FlatTopTony. These sustained successes have positioned him as one of the highest-earning Canadian live tournament players of all time.

Rather than sticking to one specific tour, Greenwood is most closely associated with the global high-roller circuit. His largest single career score came in 2023, when he won the $250,000 PCA Super High Roller. Outside of playing, he has contributed to the poker community as an Elite Pro and coach for Run It Once. He also stays connected to the industry through his publication, Punt of the Day, where he writes about the dynamics of the high-stakes tournament world.
