From Momentum to Match Point: Thornton’s Championship Run at WPT World Championship
- Schuyler Thornton wins WPT World Champion title, defeating Soheb Porbandarwala.
- $10,400 buy-in event generated a $18.27M prize pool; Thornton earned $2.26M.
- Intense final table saw strategic plays and key eliminations by Thornton.
Some wins are long, slow grinds. This one turned into a takeover once Schuyler Thornton started winning the pots that actually change your life. He outlasted a 1,865-player field, navigated a fast-moving final table, and beat Soheb Porbandarwala for the title at the WPT World Champion at Wynn Las Vegas.
The Numbers (And the Heads-up Adjustment)
The event’s $10,400 buy-in produced a $18,277,000 prize pool, with 233 paid and $19,600 as the minimum cash.
Heads-up, Thornton and Porbandarwala made a deal to adjust the remaining payouts. Official WPT results list Thornton winning $2,258,856 (including the next-season seat) and Porbandarwala taking $1,969,344.
Thornton later said:
I ran better than anyone could ever dream of running at a final table.
How the Final Table Went Down
Thornton’s dominance began early when hisA♠Q♦outkicked Maxx Coleman’s $A\clubsuit 10\heartsuit$, sending Coleman home in sixth. He then coolered Jeremy Becker in an "Ace-Ace" confrontation where Becker’s weak kicker proved fatal.

The most "chaotic" moment occurred in a three-way clash where Thornton’sA♥Q♦(top pair) held firm against Jeremy Brown and Chad Lipton on a J♥Q♥4♦board, resulting in Lipton’s fourth-place exit. While Brown survived a scare by doubling through Porbandarwala with 9♣Q♣, he eventually fell in third when his top pair ran into Thornton’s flopped set.

Heads-up was a masterclass in value. Thornton crippled Porbandarwala after turning a set of Aces (A♣A♦).
The final blow came when Thornton’sK♠A♦faded Porbandarwala’s6♥A♥flush draw.
