California Sweepstakes Ban

As California prepares to enforce its new ban on sweepstakes casino-style gambling, operators are beginning to respond. The legislation, which takes effect on January 1, targets platforms that rely on dual-currency systems and has already prompted multiple exits from the state.

The result is a rapidly changing landscape for sweepstakes poker players in California.

ClubsPoker Sets December 29 Shutdown

ClubsPoker confirmed it will stop operating in California after December 29. The company notified users by email earlier this month, advising players to redeem any remaining Sweeps Coins before the shutdown date.

Players who have moved out of California can contact customer service to update their location, potentially restoring access where permitted.

This move follows a familiar pattern for ClubsPoker, which has previously exited several states where sweepstakes casinos faced regulatory bans or adverse rulings.

Stake US Leaves Following Legislative Approval

Stake US has also withdrawn from California since the bill was signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom. The legislation prohibits dual-currency sweepstakes casino-style gambling and casts a wide net that includes not only operators but also the service providers that support them.

The breadth of the law has made continued operation increasingly impractical for many platforms.

ClubWPT Gold Takes a Different Approach

ClubWPT Gold has signaled it will attempt to remain in California by restructuring its platform. The operator eliminated its Gold Coin and Sweeps Coin system and now sells poker training credits instead.

Under this model, players are no longer purchasing currency that converts into sweepstakes entries, a change designed to sidestep the specific provisions of California’s ban. ClubWPT Gold has stated it intends to continue offering games in the state using this structure.
