Phil Hellmuth proposed limiting WSOP bracelets to 100 annually during a livestream. The plan divides events across Vegas, Paradise, Europe, Asia, and online. The debate centers on the rising number of events and the long term value of the trophy.

Phil Hellmuth sparked a major discussion about WSOP bracelets during a No Gamble No Future livestream. He asked how many WSOP bracelets per year are too many. The question came from a player who holds more bracelets than anyone else in poker history. Hellmuth has said for years that the bracelet must not lose value.

On Thursday evening he revealed that a plan is being discussed to limit the annual count to 100. He read the message from his phone while standing on set. The plan would cut the Las Vegas summer WSOP schedule to 50 bracelets.

Negreanu backs Hellmuth

As per news reports, Hellmuth said Daniel Negreanu agrees with him on the proposal. He added that Negreanu might still react publicly. Hellmuth mentioned speaking with Michael Kim about the plan.

The poker legend explained the structure as 50 bracelets in Las Vegas, 10 in Paradise, 10 in Europe, 10 in Asia, and 20 online. He said the number must be capped because 300 bracelets a year cheapen the award.

Hellmuth said that Negreanu will likely react online but confirmed that Negreanu had told him he supports the plan. Hellmuth added that several players feel the World Series is not worth what it used to be. He warned that giving away too many trophies can push the value to zero.

Protecting His Record

Hellmuth has 17 WSOP bracelets. Phil Ivey is second with 11. Hellmuth knows that a larger schedule gives more chances for rivals to close the gap. He said he would support an even smaller total if it kept the record meaningful.

The discussion on bracelet volume has existed for years. While prize pools attract players, the bracelet remains the most significant non cash trophy in poker.

From Cups to Bracelets

The WSOP introduced bracelets in 1976. Before that, winners received cups or plates. That year featured eight events. Howard Andrew won the first two bracelets. Doyle Brunson won the Main Event. In 1977, the WSOP hosted its lowest buy in event, the 100 dollar Women’s 7 Card Stud, won by Jackie McDaniel.

By 1993, 21 bracelets were awarded. In 2007, Thomas Bihl won the first WSOP bracelet outside Las Vegas in the 2,500 pound HORSE event at WSOP Europe.

The Online Shift Grows

In 2015, Anthony Spinella claimed the first online bracelet. That year featured 78 live events. The WSOP crossed 100 total bracelets in 2019, with 97 live and nine online. The total dropped in 2020 during the pandemic but nearly doubled the next year.

By 2024, the number reached 245. There were 130 live bracelets across the WSOP, WSOP Europe, WSOP Paradise, and the Tournament of Champions. Another 115 bracelets were awarded online through GGPoker and WSOP.com.

Would the WSOP Cut Back

It is unlikely that the WSOP would reduce its schedule. Cutting Las Vegas bracelets to 50 would halve the 2025 plan. The bracelet chase drives participation across events. Fewer bracelet tournaments could reduce attendance and side event entries.

It is also unlikely that Hellmuth would be the first to reveal an official change if such a plan were confirmed.

Yet discussion about a possible two tier system for WSOP trophies continues among players. The debate over bracelet volume remains part of poker’s evolving landscape.
