Usually, a mid-afternoon phone call while relaxing in a hotel room doesn't result in a seven-figure payday, but for Jean-Robert Bellande, 2026 is already proving to be anything but usual. The veteran pro, long associated with the "BrokeLiving" lifestyle, captured the biggest victory of his storied career this week at the Merit Royal Diamond Casino & Spa, taking down the Onyx High Roller Series $100,000 No-Limit Hold’em Championship for a massive $1,500,000.

What makes the victory a true poker legend story is that Bellande hadn't even planned to play. Chilling in his room and watching Netflix, he received a call from tournament founder Rob Yong. Yong, delayed by travel, offered Bellande his seat in the high-stakes event. Bellande accepted, traded his remote for a chip stack, and 24 hours later, found himself defeating Yong himself to secure the title.

The Rollercoaster: From Dominance to Disaster and Back

Bellande’s journey through the 50-entry field was a masterclass in emotional resilience. During the final two tables, "JRB" was the undisputed king of the room, wielding a massive chip lead that at one point was double that of his nearest competitor. He boosted his stack further by waking up with pocket Aces to eliminate Jessica Teusl, whose Ace-King failed to find help.

However, the final table brought a brutal "bad beat" that nearly derailed the dream. In a massive pot against Pieter Aerts, Bellande was the victim of a mathematical miracle when Aerts hit a one-outer on the turn to make a full house against Bellande’s trips. The hand sent Bellande’s stack plummeting from over 13 million to just 3.6 million, forcing him to shift his strategy from "playing for the win" to "surviving for fourth place."

With only five big blinds remaining at one point, Bellande survived a desperate all-in with pocket Deuces against Thomas Eychenne’s Ten-Eight, dodging a flush draw to stay in the hunt. From there, the momentum swung back in his favor as he eventually eliminated Aerts in fourth place with a higher flush and knocked out Markkos Ladev in third with Aces vs Top Pair.

Heads-Up: Banter and Bluffs

The final showdown was a spectator's dream: Bellande versus his benefactor, Rob Yong. The two shared a history of high-stakes cash game battles, and the heads-up duel was filled with friendly needling and tactical aggression.

Yong began the match with a significant lead, holding nearly 32 million chips to Bellande’s 17.8 million. However, the tide turned when Bellande caught Yong in a massive river bluff. After calling a shove with pocket Kings, Bellande took a commanding lead he would never relinquish.

In the final hand of the tournament, Yong fired three barrels on an Ace-high board, eventually moving all-in on the river. Bellande made a disciplined snap-call with a pair of Jacks, which was more than enough to beat Yong’s pair of Fives. The win nearly doubles Bellande’s previous career-best score and secures his status as a high-roller champion in the 2026 season.
