  • 888poker has launched as Alberta’s first regulated online poker operator, debuting on October 13.
  • Alberta players can now access a local, legal poker platform, with a separate player pool from 888’s global network.
  • The launch positions 888poker ahead of other brands expected to enter Alberta’s new iGaming market.
888poker Live in Alberta

888poker is now the first regulated online poker operator to launch in Alberta.

The platform went live on October 13, several months after Alberta opened its competitive iGaming market in July. Casino and sportsbook operators were quicker to enter, but poker took longer to appear under the new framework.

That changes with 888's launch, which gives Alberta players their first locally regulated online poker option and puts the operator ahead of several other poker brands expected to look at the market.

888poker Is First Through the Door

888's launch gives it an early position in a market that, until this week, had no regulated poker operator.

Alberta opened its competitive online gambling market on July 13, allowing approved private operators to offer products in the province. Poker was one of the slower verticals to arrive, largely because running a poker room depends on having enough players to support cash games and tournament fields.

For now, that makes 888 the only regulated poker room available to players in the province.

Why Does It Matter Who Got There First

Poker is one of the few gambling products where the number of customers directly affects the experience.

A sportsbook can take a wager from one player. A slot does not need anyone else online. Poker works differently. Cash tables need enough players to run, and tournament schedules become more appealing when fields are large enough to support a range of buy-ins and guarantees.

That gives 888 some practical value from being first. Players who want to use a regulated poker room in Alberta currently have one place to go, which gives the operator an opportunity to establish regular traffic before another platform launches.

Alberta Players Are in a Separate Pool

The Alberta version of 888poker is not connected to the operator's international player base.

Players in the province compete in a separate Alberta-only pool, rather than sitting with users on 888's global network or its Ontario platform. That arrangement will have a direct effect on the size of cash-game traffic and tournament fields, particularly outside the busiest hours.

A C$22 Sunday Mystery Bounty Main Event carries a C$4,000 guarantee, while lower-priced events make up much of the rest of the schedule. Those figures are smaller than players on international networks may be used to, although that is hardly surprising for a market that has only just started operating.
