Online Poker in Alberta
Alberta's online poker picture changed fundamentally on July 13, 2026, when the province launched a regulated, competitive iGaming market regulated by the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC), working with the Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC) on commercial agreements.
This made Alberta the second Canadian province, after Ontario, to open its online gambling market to private operators, ending the government's monopoly through Play Alberta.
Online poker specifically is a more complicated story than online casino and sports betting. Poker was not part of the initial July 13 launch lineup, which focused on casino and sportsbook products from operators such as BetMGM, FanDuel, DraftKings, theScore Bet, BetRivers, Caesars, and Bally's Canada.
Alberta's rules require regulated poker operators to run on a ring-fenced basis at first, meaning games can only be played among users physically located in Alberta, with no shared liquidity with Ontario or international player pools.
Because Alberta's population of roughly 4.2 million is considered too small on its own to support deep tournament fields and healthy cash games, most poker-focused operators have been cautious about launching a stand-alone Alberta platform.
During a transition period running from July 13 to October 13, 2026, existing international poker sites remained accessible to Albertans while operators worked toward compliance.
PokerStars and PartyPoker both confirmed they were staying in the market, with PokerStars expected to relaunch as a dedicated Alberta platform under PokerStars on FanDuel branding using Playtech software, and PartyPoker Alberta expected to follow.
GGPoker did not apply for an Alberta iGaming licence at launch and its service to Alberta players was cut off on July 13, though the operator later registered with the AGLC on August 12, 2026, which could allow a future return if shared liquidity with Ontario is agreed.
